What to expect in 2nd Grade

Good to Knows about 2nd Grade:

*Students will fill out their assignment books every day. This will include homework and important announcements. Please check and sign these daily. We can also communicate through these :)

*Homework-we will practice together for 2 weeks and then after that students will have consistent homework. Monday-Wednesday will be word work homework. Students will receive a sheet of choices to do-they get to pick! Monday and Wednesday will be math homework. A home reading log will be sent home every Friday. Students should read 20 minutes and fill out their reading log. Homework should take no longer than 30 minutes per night.

*I love volunteers! Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering in our classroom!

Classroom parties will be given for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. Letters explaining parties will be sent home. Also, on birthdays let me know if you would like to bring in a treat (usually at the end of the day). :)

*Your students will learn so much this year! In reading, we will do the Daily 5-read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing. This is a great literacy program where students can be more independent in centers. We will learn decoding and comprehension strategies as well as reading a lot of informational (non-fiction text) as well as fiction. In math, your 2nd grader will learn about addition, regrouping, subtraction, multiplication, place value, time, money, geometry and many strategies! In writing, we will work on narratives, opinion pieces, and research. There will also be many experiments and activities in Science and Social Studies. Near the end of the year we have Science Day!

*We will be doing a Flat Stanley Project--more to come about this once we read the book. Your child will make a Flat Stanley to travel the world so we can learn about other cultures!

*Family Message Journal (FMJ)--this is where your student will write to you every day. This is a great way for you to connect with your student about their day. They love writing to you! A letter will be sent home with more information when we start it.

*Leader of the day--students love this! After sending in pictures and filling out the "all about me paper" your child will be star of the day. This is a very special day! We will learn more about your child, chant out their name, and create an "I like" book for your child where everyone writes about why they like your child. :)
